Abington Select Board Signs $850,000 Trash Contract, Saves Over Previous Year

ABINGTON — July 13, 2026 — Abington Select Board approved an $850,000 annual trash and recycling contract and heard that the town's former school buildings will generate $2 million and 56 affordable units. The board voted unanimously Monday to authorize Town Manager Michael Moretz to sign the curbside contract with Allstate Waste — which underbid Republic Services by more than $330,000 on the combined trash and recycling categories and Waste Management, which bid only recycling, was disqualified. Finance Director Andrew Nocera presented $1.165 million in fiscal year 2026 year-end transfers, with the largest sums covering a $500,000 police salary gap and $413,000 of a $1.3 million snow and ice deficit that still leaves roughly $900,000 outstanding. Nocera warned the board the town "is already $300,000 in the hole next year for snow and ice." Moretz announced Causeway Development has been awarded both Center School and North School, with the town receiving approximately $2 million; the two 1938 buildings will be converted to 56 affordable housing units generating an estimated $350,000 to $400,000 per year in property taxes once complete.
