Whitman Board of Health Sets May Hauler Regulation Hearing, Approves Recycling Hire

WHITMAN — April 13, 2026 — Whitman Board of Health approves recycling hire, eyes May 11 public hearing on hauler regulation overhaul. The board voted unanimously April 13 to accept Jeffrey F. Moon as Recycling Center Attendant 1, with a projected May 2 start date pending a Select Board background check April 21, and set a tentative May 11 public hearing on draft regulations that would require Whitman's eight licensed haulers to provide bundled trash-and-recycling service to residential customers and submit annual tonnage reports. Town accountant Elizabeth Barth warned the board that the Solid Waste and Recycling Enterprise Fund is projecting a positive balance of only roughly $26,000 through April against an April GW Shaw bill of $56,394.90, saying "if we go into deficit, we have to cover it before the year's out." The board also approved a $62,524.20 invoice warrant — including $1,300 for 20 compost bins purchased under the state's Resource Recovery Development grant — and voted to raffle one compost bin at the upcoming Earth Day event.
