Whitman Council on Aging Backs Director's Reappointment to Regional Elder Services Board

WHITMAN — May 13, 2026 — Whitman Council on Aging unanimously backs director's reappointment and learns of regional elder services merger. The board, meeting Wednesday morning at the Whitman senior center, voted to recommend reappointing its director to the Old Colony Elder Services Board of Directors, a submission that now goes to the Select Board for formal approval. In committee updates, the director informed members that South Shore Elder Services — the Aging Services Access Point serving roughly 10 communities including Braintree, Weymouth, and Hingham — has been experiencing financial difficulties and will be absorbed by Old Colony Elder Services effective on or around June 1, with the Massachusetts Council on Aging's approval. "The bigger concern is that it doesn't disrupt services to the people," the director said, relaying assurances from Old Colony that staffing and services would continue through the transition. April programming highlights included a sold-out Tai Chi launch with a waiting list, a traveling petting zoo featuring two-week-old baby goats from Channel Homestead of Hanson, and a piracy history presentation by Rhode Island educator Luca Ribesini in full period costume.
