Bridgewater Finance Committee defers $1.6M capital transfer, forms two subcommittees

Finance Committee · Meeting of January 5, 2026

Bridgewater Finance Committee defers $1.6M capital transfer vote and creates two oversight subcommittees. The committee declined Monday to issue a recommendation on Transfer Order FY26-042, a $1,583,446 general fund capital transfer for fiscal year 2026, and on the related five-year capital improvement plan, continuing both items to a January 12 meeting and asking members to submit questions to Finance Director Lori Garini by January 8. IT Director Brad Desirzak explained a $230,000 data center overhaul driven by VMware licensing costs jumping from roughly $5,000 one-time to $25,000 annually following Broadcom's acquisition of the platform, with the town eyeing a Nutanix hyper-converged environment at an estimated $46,000 per year.

Member John Higgins pressed for a cloud-versus-on-premise cost analysis before any commitment, saying the committee was being asked to approve roughly $800,000 in IT spending over two years without sufficient justification. The committee unanimously approved a Subcommittee on Long-Term Liabilities, chaired by Dana Sullivan with John Higgins as secretary, and a Subcommittee on Capital Plan and Capital Planning, chaired by the committee chair with Dr. Bennett as secretary — with both groups set to hold organizational meetings the week of January 19.
