Halifax Finance Committee flags school budget gap, PFAS settlement update at first 2026 meeting
Finance Committee · Meeting of January 5, 2026
Halifax Finance Committee opens 2026 budget season with a school funding gap and PFAS settlement update. Chair Jim Walters told the committee Monday that applying Proposition 2.5 to the elementary school's current appropriation of $7,615,813 yields a maximum FY27 figure of $7,806,209 — a 2.5 percent increase — while the school has requested roughly 3 percent, creating an early gap heading into Town Meeting season. Town staff member Lindsay confirmed that a second PFAS class-action settlement payment of approximately $234,000 was received in November, with one more payment pending and a projected total near $500,000; resident Chris Winowitz confirmed the funds are restricted and must be appropriated at Town Meeting for PFAS-related expenses.
Walters also flagged several budget lines running well above mid-year pace, including a veterans' gifts account at 613 percent of plan, and said he would contact the school's incoming business administrator — replacing retiring Superintendent Sarah Hickey — to open negotiations over what the town can afford.
