Marshfield CPC Rejects Friendship Hall Grant, Sends Five Projects to Town Meeting

Marshfield's Community Preservation Committee rejected a $250,000 historic preservation grant for Friendship Hall and unanimously approved five other proposals totaling more than $1.8 million for the April town meeting. The 2-6 vote against the Friends of Friendship Hall application — presented by Chris Johnson and architect Chris DiOrsay — came after more than an hour of deliberation over the constitutionality of directing public funds to a church-owned property and concerns about spending on privately held buildings, with Chair Dennis Kelleher calling it "a great application, great people, great property" before voting no. The committee then unanimously backed $250,000 for a Habitat for Humanity three-bedroom home at 1929 Main Street, $1,175,000 for LED lighting at both the Marshfield High School varsity baseball and softball fields, $30,932 to supplement existing funds for Chapel Cemetery restoration, and $250,000 for Cedar Grove Cemetery Phase 1 restoration; it also voted 6-2 to send a $25,000 housing authority community development corporation startup request to town meeting, with public commenter Molly of 142 Old Main Street calling the figure "absolutely ridiculous" against comparable nonprofit costs.

Three applications — the Revolutionary War Monument, Wrexham Basketball Court, and Harbor Walk Phase 3 — were withdrawn before the meeting.
