Scituate Schools Freeze Budget Ahead of Tight FY28

School Committee · Meeting of September 28, 2026

Scituate schools freeze spending now to brace for a brutal fiscal 2028. Superintendent Dr. Rav told the School Committee that new town tax-base growth will fall to roughly $700,000-$800,000, down from nearly $2 million in recent years, while health insurance and county retirement costs keep climbing 8 to 11 percent annually, leaving schools projected to gain only about $400,000 under the town's revenue-sharing formula.

Dr. Rav has already frozen discretionary spending at current levels, reserving about 20 percent of each budget line. Separately, the committee reviewed new DESE MCAS accountability data showing the high school made only "moderate progress" and saw math and science scores decline, while elementary and middle schools showed "substantial progress." The committee approved $5,464 in donations unanimously and took no other votes.
