WHITMAN — The Whitman Board of Selectmen set a January 25, 2027 Special Town Meeting and a January 30, 2027 Special Town Election for a second vote on excluding South Shore Technical High School debt from the tax levy. Town Administrator Mary Beth Carter said the preliminary fiscal 2028 deficit is roughly $996,355 if the exclusion passes, nearly double if it fails, driven partly by rising Plymouth County Retirement Association assessments. The board also voted 4-1, with Selectman Dawn Byers opposed, to approve a new 10-year access agreement with Whitman-Hanson Community Access, after Byers said "I felt like I couldn't agree to that agreement two weeks ago in locking in ... the future." Dr.
Tom Hickey of South Shore Technical High School reported construction bids running "about $13 million below estimates." The board also adopted the town's first Building Department fee increase since 2019 and voted to have the state Department of Local Services develop a financial policy manual for Whitman.
