Whitman Select Board Approves $116K in Transfers, Honors Retiring Officer Stokinger

WHITMAN — June 30, 2026 — Whitman Select Board closes fiscal year with $116K in transfers and a retirement honor. The board unanimously approved four line item transfers at its June 30 meeting to cover a $107,381.37 snow and ice deficit — offset in part by $142,767.92 in state winter assistance — plus a $5,900 payout for retiring DPW Director Bruce Martin, a $1,642.58 vacation payout for a laid-off town clerk employee, and $1,500 in outstanding facilities invoices, all drawn largely from a surplus in the medical life insurance town match account. The board honored Officer Robert Stokinger, retiring after 30 years effective July 6, with Police Chief Clancy presenting a retired badge and noting Stokinger will remain as a special officer. Acting Town Administrator Mary Beth Carter introduced incoming Assistant Town Administrator Matt Dyer, reported 16 applicants for the open town administrator position, and flagged a $254,000 sprinkler-system quote as the likely first step in any Corthell building restoration using CPC funds. Conservation Commission representative Ed Winnett presented a $218,000 opportunity to acquire 12.5 acres on Jacob's Lane for conservation, pending a CPC application and town meeting, with two additional grant decisions — $170,000 for Hobart Dam engineering and $25,000 for a rail trail feasibility study — both expected in July.
