Halifax Town Meeting Converts Clerk and Treasurer Offices to Appointed Positions

HALIFAX -- May 12, 2026, Halifax Town Meeting advances governance overhaul and keeps $1.5 million override on Saturday's ballot. Meeting on the second night of the annual session, residents voted 149 to 79 to convert the town clerk's office from elected to appointed, the narrowest result of the evening, requiring a formal hand count, and approved a similar conversion for the treasurer-collector on a less contested voice vote; both changes require voter ratification at Saturday's town election and Attorney General review before taking effect. A motion to reconsider the Proposition 2½ override article, pressed by resident Matthew Beals after he argued that shifting budget figures and a procedural "move the question" tactic had cut off debate Monday night, failed by a clear majority, leaving ballot question four, whether to assess an additional $1.5 million in property taxes beginning July 1, 2026, intact for the May 16 vote.
