Lakeville Board of Health tightens septic rules, adds tiered permit fees
Board of Health · Meeting of May 20, 2026
Lakeville Board of Health unanimously adopts tiered septic fees and stronger denitrification rules. Following a public hearing that drew no outside speakers or written comments, the board voted 3-0 on both measures after three meetings of deliberation. The new fee structure keeps the existing $300 permit for systems under 1,000 gallons per day but adds $300 per additional 1,000 gallons per day above that threshold, aligning Lakeville with neighboring communities and ensuring larger commercial and shared systems pay their fair share of inspection costs.
An amendment to Regulation 20 adds a third trigger for mandatory advanced denitrification treatment — any system with a design flow exceeding 2,000 gallons per day — closing a gap that previously left high-volume systems near residential wells without enhanced nitrogen controls. Board of Health agent Ed noted the fee had previously been subsidizing large-system applicants: "The bigger systems weren't charged the same rate, and the bulk of the fees we're getting from homeowners."
