Whitman Finance Committee Debates Library Override, Splits on Budget Path Forward

WHITMAN — March 31, 2026 — Whitman Finance Committee debates library override and budget cuts as a $500,000 structural deficit forces hard choices. Town Administrator Mary Beth Carter told the committee that a Select Board-backed library-specific override — placed on the May 16 ballot by a 3-2 Select Board vote — would cost the average homeowner about $93 per year on a home valued at $516,000, while using free cash instead would balloon the fiscal 2028 deficit from roughly $659,000 to $1.2 million. Library Director Rebecca Langer warned that a full library closure, not mere decertification, would expel Whitman from the Old Colony Library Network and that 12 neighboring towns — including Abington, Hingham, Braintree, and Marshfield — have already confirmed they will not lend to Whitman residents. Whitman-Hanson Regional School District officials reported 64 staff positions eliminated over the past 12 months at a cost of just under $2 million, and cautioned that defunding the non-mandated transportation line of roughly $230,000 could legally invalidate the entire regional school district budget.
