Brockton subcommittee votes to advance turf fields
School Committee · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Brockton school panel opens harassment probe, advances $6M turf field plan. The Athletics, Arts, Music and Extracurricular Activities Subcommittee heard that Brockton marching band students faced racial and sexual harassment from fans during a Sept. 18 game at Franklin High School; member Denise Oliver said "no child should face what they faced" and is pushing for a bullying and bias investigation. Band director Andy Fantuccio and Principal Kevin McCaskill are gathering student accounts.
Separately, the panel voted 4-0 to refer a two-field turf expansion, once estimated at $4.5 million and now closer to $6 million, to the Facilities Subcommittee. Music Director Rebecca Desmond reported sixth-grade band sign-ups jumped from 74 to 179 students, but the district still needs $70,000 for seven replacement sousaphones. Athletic Director Kevin Cable reported 255 varsity athletes competing this fall after freshman football and JV soccer were both canceled for low turnout.
