Hanson Conservation Commission Continues Lake Home Hearing, Approves Girl Scout Trail Signs

HANSON — February 18, 2026 — Hanson Conservation Commission approves Girl Scout trail signs and weighs community service deal after illegal wetland tree cutting. The commission voted 4-0 Wednesday to approve a Leave No Trace sign project proposed by Girl Scout Troop 82684 for conservation properties including the Plymouth County Hospital trail on High Street, with the scouts directed to submit a design proof to the conservation office before installation. Conservation Agent Frank Skellinger reported that Hanson police in early February found two 18-year-old high school students cutting trees with axes in a wetland off Industrial Boulevard, with Tree Warden Graham subsequently identifying at least 11 to 12 large pine trees cut across two locations — potential fines of $3,600 or more under the town's $300-per-violation wetlands bylaw. Skellinger and Commissioner David Mansfield proposed offering the individuals 100 hours of community service each as an alternative to financial penalties, with Skellinger authorized to contact them early the following week after Mansfield surveys a second, not-yet-fully-documented cutting area. The commission also continued a wetlands hearing for a 10-foot front addition at 166 Pine Grove Avenue to March 4, pending receipt of a state DEP file number, and approved a third year of phragmites treatment at Smitty's Bog and Camp Wanni.
