Select Board keeps counsel amid wire transfer probe

Select Board · Meeting of August 27, 2026

East Bridgewater Select Board declines to hire independent counsel for wire transfer fallout. Vice Chair Katherine Mullen raised the idea after a public records request tied to the June 1, 2026 wire transfer incident was denied, then appealed to the Secretary of State's office, which found the town's justification insufficient. Clerk Peter Spagone Jr. said the town has "no doubt" already spent more than $10,000 on an outside investigation and warned that hiring another firm on a 10-day deadline risked getting stuck "in a queue." Chair Carole Julius said she saw no conflict in the town's regular firm, Clifford & Kenny, weighing in on the records dispute.

No vote was taken; the board reached consensus to keep its current counsel. Members separately approved, unanimously, a permit for Michelle Lissard to hold a Pilates class on the Town Common on Sunday, Aug. 30.
