Whitman Health Board Backs Regional Waste Depot
Board of Health · Meeting of September 21, 2026
Whitman Board of Health backs joining a 12-town hazardous waste depot after a pop-up event blew the budget. Health Agent Dan Kelly told the board a September 12 pop-up collection day drew 62 cars and consumed the entire household hazardous waste budget, prompting a 2-0 vote, with Dawn Barley and Danielle Clancy in favor, to support an inter-municipal agreement moving Whitman toward a regional depot instead. The shift carries an upfront cost increase of roughly $2,400 to $2,500, offset potentially by a future co-pay, versus Kelly's estimate of "upwards of $15,000" to run an independent collection day, which he called "definitely not fiscally liable." The board also reported 600 free COVID-19 test kits are being distributed through the Housing Authority, Council on Aging and library, and said the closed Family Dollar store remains about 98 percent toward the pest-remediation standard needed to reopen.
